Each project carries its own unique characteristics and
requirements. Therefore, each project is evaluated carefully, and
a fee structure developed that provides the client with the most
cost effective approach in meeting the project's objective.
Most services are provided based upon an hourly rate, often with a
not-to-exceed figure for larger projects. However, revisions are
a necessary evil in providing writing and graphic design services,
and must be factored into each project.
Writing/Editing/Research Projects:
-
Hourly Fees – These fees are simply billed for the actual
time utilized in completing the project based upon an hourly
rate. Accurate timesheets are maintained on each project and
referenced with each invoice.
-
Per-Word Fees – These fees are generally quoted for
publications where a certain word length is required. In most
cases, this rate ranges from $0.25 to $1.00/ word based upon the
level of research required.
-
Per-Project Fee – This fee structure provides a set rate
per task, page or project. On larger projects, the client will
sometimes receive a fee structure with a not-to-exceed limit.
However, this fee structure usually has contingencies factored
in for modest revisions within the scope of work. Revisions
that are beyond the scope of work will require a change
order, and additional fees.
Graphic Design and Website Design Projects:
These projects are often the most difficult to estimate.
Therefore, on many occasions these projects are based upon a fixed
rate minimum or based upon an hourly rate with a not-to-exceed.
However, again, revisions are part of the creative process.
Revisions that are beyond the agreed scope of services for the
project will require a change order, and additional fees.
Hourly rates and fees for services performed
are in keeping with the guidelines and standards set forth by the
National Writers’ Union (NWU), the Writer’s Market, and the
American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA).
Defining the Scope of Work:
Communication is
nine-tenths the success of any project. Effective
communication and collaboration between the writer/ artist and the
client results is an efficient working relationship and a
successful end product. When neither gives clear and direct
input, the result is waste of everyone's time and energy.
It is essential to
the success of any project and working relationship that both
parties involved communicate their ideas and expectations.
Clients are always encouraged to feel comfortable in articulating
their objectives.
